Manolete
Manuel
Rodríguez Sánchez
Spanish bullfighter
1947.- Manuel Rodríguez "Manolete" dies, Spanish
bullfighter who the day before was caught to death in the Plaza de Linares when
entering to kill the bull "Islero"
Legendary Spanish bullfighter who imposed his own style,
leaving a mark that still endures. He made the concept of bullfighting change
to the fans in such a way that there was a way of fighting before and after
him. In the Linares bullring, he was fatally gored by a miura weighing almost
500 kg named Islero, which pierced his right thigh, the wound caused incessant
bleeding and he died early on a day like today, August 29.
He was born on July 4, 1917 at number 2 Calle del Conde Torres
Cabrera in Córdoba.
His father was the matador with the same nickname who died
when Manuel was only five years old. He is also family of the bullfighters José
Dámaso Rodríguez, Pepete, José Rodríguez Sánchez, Bebe Chico, and the
banderillero Rafael Sánchez, Bebe. His mother, Agustina Sánchez, married
Lagartijo Chico for the first time.
He gave his first caps in 1929 at the 'Lobatón' farm, near
Córdoba.
He fights dressed for the first time in lights in 1933 in a
night bullfight held in the square of the French town of Arles.

In Córdoba he appears with picadors on July 27, 1935. On May
26 he appears in Seville, where he achieves a resounding victory on June 5 and
October 9. On this occasion he sublimely stabbed two steers from Villamarta.
Legendary bullfighter who imposed his own style, controversial
or not, passionate in debates, talks and articles, leaving a mark that still
lasts. He made the concept of bullfighting change to the fans in such a way
that there was a way of fighting before and after him. He took the alternative
on July 2, 1939 from the hands of Rafael Jiménez Chicuelo, with Rafael Vega de
los Reyes Gitanillo de Triana as witness and bulls from Clemente Tassara. He
had a dry and austere personality, rigorous and with a style of profile, almost
in line with the python, and with the muleta set back, which forced the bull to
first pass in front of the bullfighter's body. His style was the extension of
his character, austere, essential, dry and courageous. Sober and tough but also
elegant, he imposed himself on the bull just like in his social life.
In 1940 he added 50 bullfights, four of them in Madrid. That
season he obtained notable successes in Seville, Alicante, Bilbao, San
Sebastián and Barcelona. In 1941, he had 58 runs. In 1942, he performed 72
times, triumphing in Barcelona and at the most relevant fairs. The season was
already well underway when he performed twice in the capital, the last being on
September 27, the afternoon in which a bull gored him, causing a serious injury
to his right thigh. He carried out 74 bullfights in 1943. May 29, June 2 and
July 15 are the dates of three especially fortunate afternoons for the Córdoban
in Madrid. In 1944 he fought 92 bullfights, almost all with notable success. It
is the season in which he performs the most complete task of his entire career.
It was on July 6 in the Plaza de Las Ventas, in the bullfight of the Press
Association. In 1945, he added 71 bullfights, on June 29 in Alicante, a
Francisco Chica bull fractured his clavicle.
In Mexico it is presented on December 9, with Torrecilla
bulls. Between the end of that year 1945 and the beginning of 1946 he fought in
Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. During the 1946 campaign he only bullfighted on
one occasion, on September 19 in Madrid, together with Antonio Bienvenida and Luis
Miguel Dominguín, with bulls from Carlos Núñez. At the end of that year he
fights in Mexico and Peru. When he returns to Spain, in 1947, he begins his
season when the campaign is already quite advanced. On July 16, he fights what
would be his last bullfight in Las Ventas, the Charity one. He was injured in
the leg by a Bohórquez bull.
On August 28, 1947, after having been much discussed the
previous season, as he was accused of excessive comforts and of taking
advantage of the bulls he imposed, and of not having only bullfighted that
year, he shared the bill in Linares with Luis Miguel Dominguín and Gitanillo de
Triana. The second of his lot, Islero, from Miura, arrives very late and
pushing to supreme luck. Manolete, as always, gives himself up, but makes a
technical error and executes the lunge very slowly. The bull plunges the python
into its right thigh to the sting. It was said that the damage caused to
Scarpa's triangle crossed by the femoral vein caused the great hemorrhage that
led to his death on August 29, 1947 at five hours and seven minutes in the
morning.
The final cause of the bullfighter's death remained
controversial. In 1997 it was revealed by the son of the doctor from Linares
who treated the bullfighter, Fernando Garrido. It seems that after being
caught, which had been serious but not fatal, the bullfighter had lost a lot of
blood and Fernando Garrido operated and arranged for the necessary blood
transfusions, which began to be done. A few hours later the bullfighter
recovered, spoke, smoked a cigarette and even asked how the bullfight had gone,
although he was still weak. It was then that Dr. Giménez Guinea arrived, in
whom Manolete had great confidence, and ordered that the transfusions be
suspended and that a Norwegian plasma be applied to him: a few seconds after
the plasma entered the bullfighter's blood, death appeared.
With Affection,
Ruben
